Scottsdale lawn servicesWith a little help from our Scottsdale lawn services at J&D Lawn Service, you could turn part of your yard into a place for lawn bowling. Have you ever played? Lawn bowling is actually an activity enjoyed the world over in both indoor and outdoor venues.  If you’re new to this activity, lawn bowling is fairly easy to learn–and even master–regardless of age or physical fitness. Here in our Arizona climate, it can be played a year-round since it’s not especially strenuous and suitable for play even during the hot summer (although we would recommend doing so early in the morning or after the sun goes down).

Choose the Type

There are two kinds of lawn bowling. The first, and most popular in the U.S., is pin bowling where the objective is to knock down as many pins as possible by rolling a ball toward them. Most of us are familiar with this type of bowling as it is similar to the indoor variety. If you want to create a lawn bowling green in your yard, J&D Lawn Service can help. We can work with you to determine the perfect place in your yard, prepare the surface and maintain the green for beauty and playability.

The second kind of lawn bowling is called target bowling. Dating back to the 13th century, it is also called lawn bowls. There is even a world tournament held annually in Edinburgh, Scotland. With this type of lawn bowling, instead of knocking down pins, the goal is to roll more balls closer to the target than the other players. It is somewhat similar to shuffleboard or curling, but also obviously different.

What’s Required

You don’t need a large lawn to get started. You can actually proportion the game based on the length of your yard and the extent of your turf.  As mentioned, our Scottsdale lawn services professionals from J&D can help you prepare and maintain an ideal surface, leaving you more time to learn and enjoy the game.

The equipment for either type of lawn bowling doesn’t require much of an investment, and it’s easy to pick up and put away. You can even make your own pin bowling equipment using empty liter-soda bottles and a child’s ball. However, if you do decide to buy your own equipment, you will get a better sense of how the experts play. This is because the balls used in target bowling are specially made and are weighted differently so that they purposely curve as they roll.

If you have never tried lawn bowling, and you’d like to add some space in your yard to give it a try, contact us at J&D Lawn Service.
